Five Things I Never Leave Home Without for a Wild Swim

From the Water's Edge

Five Things I Never Leave Home Without for a Wild Swim

By Natasha Shuttleworth | Founder, Wild Wellness

"The best conversations rarely happen before the swim."

They happen afterwards: wrapped in towels, holding a mug of tea, laughing about how cold it really was and sharing homemade cake beside the lake with people who, only an hour earlier, were complete strangers.

That is one of the reasons I love open water swimming. Yes, the water is restorative. Yes, spending time outdoors is good for us. But what keeps many of us returning is something deeper: the friendships, the shared adventures and the feeling that, for a little while, we have stepped away from busy lives and remembered what really matters.

People often ask me what they need before heading out for a wild swim. The answer is not lots of expensive equipment. It is a handful of simple essentials that help you stay safe, comfortable and ready to enjoy every adventure.

1. A Tow Float

A tow float is the one piece of open water swimming kit I encourage every swimmer to own. Bright, lightweight and highly visible, it helps other water users see you while giving you somewhere to rest if needed. Safety is about giving yourself every opportunity for things to go right. Whether you are new to wild swimming or enjoy regular cold water swimming, a tow float is one of the simplest habits you can build.

2. A Dry Bag

A dry bag, or waterproof bag, quickly becomes one of those items you wonder how you ever managed without. Keeping your keys, phone and valuables dry allows you to relax and enjoy the experience. Many swim floats combine a tow float with a dry bag, making them ideal open water swimming essentials.

3. A Changing Robe

Some of my favourite memories have not happened in the water at all. They happened afterwards, standing beside the lake chatting long after we planned to leave. A changing robe brings warmth, comfort and privacy, making it easier to stay a little longer and enjoy the community that grows around outdoor swimming.

4. Water, Food and Care

Cold water swimming uses more energy than many people realise. A bottle of water and a simple snack help your body recover afterwards. Looking after yourself does not stop when you leave the lake. I also encourage everyone to leave no trace by taking litter home and respecting these beautiful places.

5. Curiosity

This is the only essential you cannot buy. Every swim is different. Rather than chasing distance or time, arrive with curiosity. How does the water feel today? What do I notice? What do I need? Some days that is a swim. Some days it is a gentle dip. The water meets you exactly where you are.

Before You Head Out

Whether you are preparing for your first wild swim or your next shared adventure, good preparation, the right wild swimming accessories and a willingness to slow down will help you enjoy the experience. Pack well, look after one another, respect the water and stay a little longer afterwards. Sometimes that is where the best memories are made.
