Spooky Season Swimming

Nothing Screams Halloween Like Our Orange Tow, Gloves and Boots Set!!

What time of the year is it completely acceptable to dress up as crazy as you like without strange stares or people thinking you have lost the plot? You nailed it – Halloween! And our Dippy Tribe know how to swim in style for the Fright Night time of year.

Zombies, vampires and all things gruesome come out for All Hallows Eve so why wouldn’t an open water swimming group join in the fun? From witch costumes to ghostly sheets, the wild swimming community adds extra Halloween fun to their swims for the October festival.

No spooky season swim would be complete without the Dippy Orange range to perfectly match the pumpkins, the leaves and the autumn vibes of the year. Our bright orange tow float paired with our neoprene gloves and boots give cold water swimmers an instant autumn style whilst being safe, seen and original. For many, the water temperatures are dropping close to 10 degrees so not quite winter swimming, but still cold enough that you need to remember the safety aspects of open water swimming. Summer has gone and those warm, sunny after swim mingles and long bright evenings have departed. We now enter the stage of thicker neoprene, speed, darkness, layers, and heat.

Be Safe, Be Seen

Never swim alone especially in the dark or in colder temperatures. If you can’t convince another swimmer into the water, then ensure you have a spotter on shore who knows where you are.

In the dark add a light inside your Dippy tow float to ensure you can be seen from a distance.

Pack your glasses, whistle or anything else essential inside your Dippy tow float. One Halloween swimmer took her glasses off to put a ghostly sheet on and unfortunately they fell out of her hands and were lost in the dark water.

Know your limits. Experience will teach you how to read your body as there is not a one size fits all time frame for how long to be in the colder waters of autumn. For newbies it is best practice to acclimatise by staying in a few minutes each swim to build up your tolerance.

Speed, layers and heat are the open water swimmer’s aim after a swim in the cold water. Have your dry clothes and towels ready before you enter the water so you can undress and get dry quickly afterwards. Layers are key so a t-shirt, followed by a jumper, topped with a changing robe, hat, gloves and a scarf will bring instant heat to the cooling body. Remember the body continues to cool after you exit the water, so it is vital to add heat but not to shock the system, hence why we don’t recommend immediately jumping into a hot bath or shower.

All that’s left is to have fun this All Hallows Eve and stay safe. Happy Halloween from all The Dippy Team.
